It is really important that when developing the front-end of your website that you ensure your Magento developer understands that Magento have templates for a reason!

Ok, so the Magento templates that come out of the box are pretty basic (ok, awful) and guess what, it does not mean that you cannot have the design you want and desire still. Magento built the templates in such a way that is makes use of all the key features in Magento i.e. showing cross-sells, basket details, last viewed etc, but most importantly is the on-page optimisation HTML work. The Magento templates have been developed in such a way that they are optimised for the search engines i.e. H1 tag used for the product title, p tag for the description, div's for formatting data and so on.

The reason why I am talking about this, is that at Object Source we have come across a few new clients recently where we have had to recode their front-end pages because the Magento Freelance developer provided an amazing design, but did not honour the Magento Template format – doh! So the client was wondering why their natural search engine ranking was either dropping or becoming non-existent.

You have to remember, Google is getting more and more strict about which sites they will index or not, they too have a duty to their customers to provide the most relevant, latest results.

If you are unsure about whether your website is optimised for the search engines, then just get in touch with us and we will be happy to review your site for free.
