I have to say, this has been a great experience for us, we decided to test out a fee things that we want to offer our clients.
So, the first thing we decided to test was designing straight into the browser rather than create flat designs to present, like most agencies do. This was a real experiment, we wanted to test if it was an easier and more efficient process, after all, all our web designers know HTML/CSS just as well as they do Photoshop. Wow, we suddenly realised that it was the most effective way we have ever done web design, from the off we knew exactly how the site was going to look in a browser and how we would interact with it. We skipped a whole stage of our process and were rocking with discussing features and functions.
The other area we wanted to test was whether WordPress would be good for these types of websites, ones that are really more about presenting your brochure. We have always dismissed WordPress in the past as only being good for blogging sites and ones that don’t need a lot of design wow! This was to be yet another experiment with great results, just look at our website, that tell you it all!
Finally, we wanted to make the site responsive – let the user have a great experience on any device; smartphone, tablet, desktop. Doing a responsive website itself is relatively straight forward if your design is not challenging, just based on an equal square grid, but this is not what we wanted from our website. With great use of HTML5 and careful consideration of the design from the beginning – prototyping the design in the browser – we really nailed it.
Now it is time to embark on the biggest experiment yet and that is to put our money where our mouth is when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). This is where we want to take our experience and skills and put them to work on our site, start generating interest through the website. Time to make this a real sales and marketing platform and learn some lessons we can pass onto you.
