Magento have announced that they will be closing the Magento Go platform as of February 1st 2015, I have never been a big fan of the platform instead preferring to advise clients on a Magento Community install with a well designed theme and more recently a fully responsive theme. I just couldn’t see any good reason for one of our clients to pay out a monthly fee to Magento for a limited and restricted version of the Magento functionality when you can have all the power and flexibility of a community install.

What is Magento Go
It is a cloud based service that is hosted by Magento themselves for a monthly fee depending on number of products and data you use. Aimed at promoting small enterprises is comes with basic Magento functionality, limited skins to choose from and supported in-house by Magento.

Migration from Magento Go to Magento Community Migration
Don’t panic, Magento will still support you until February 2015 and this should give you enough time to safely migrate to another platform. The obvious choice is to migrate to Magento Community edition, this is the standard free and open source platform from Magento, unlike “Magento Go” it needs to be hosted somewhere and it needs to be supported by a agency/developer. Magento Community edition comes with a massive range of features that you don’t get with Magento Go such as Unlimited catalogue and data (no SKU restrictions), fully customisable to your needs, bespoke designed themes and endless extensions from the community.
